Highway Changes to Ease Traffic Heading to Limassol
Cyprus is rolling out a series of strategic changes to its highway infrastructure, aimed at alleviating traffic congestion, especially for those heading to Limassol. Let’s dive into the details of both ongoing and upcoming modifications that are set to make your journey smoother.
Kalavasos Bridge Upgrades
- On January 25, 2025, at 15:00, two lanes on the Nicosia-Limassol motorway reopened after extensive upgrades to the Kalavasos bridge.
- However, from January 30 to May 15, 2025, both northbound lanes (the direction toward Nicosia) will be closed for about one kilometer. Make sure to plan ahead!
- During this closure, traffic will be diverted to a contra-flow setup on the opposite carriageway, so be prepared for potential delays.
Carnival Celebrations Traffic Management
- Mark your calendars for March 2, 2025, as special traffic arrangements will be in effect due to the much-anticipated carnival celebrations in Limassol.
- The carnival parade is scheduled to kick off at 1 PM on Limassol’s Makarios Avenue.
- Until 2 PM, you can expect two lanes to remain open for traffic heading towards Limassol.
- After 4 PM, the traffic will revert back to the arrangement initiated in late January, with one lane available in each direction for approximately one kilometer.
Long-Term Road Works
- Bridge upgrade and repair works on the Kalavasos bridge are set to commence from September 9 to December 23, 2024.
- Note that the entrance to the highway towards Limassol from the old Limassol-Nicosia road at the Zygio junction will be closed during this time.
- Traffic from the old road will be redirected through the Aktis tou Kivernitis junction, so stay alert!
New Motorway Opening
- In late 2024, a new motorway was inaugurated with the primary goal of easing traffic congestion.
- Early traffic monitoring shows that approximately 17,000 vehicles are using this new route on a daily basis.
- Additionally, traffic reductions of up to 12% have been observed on the Nicosia-Limassol motorway.
- Even more impressive is the 40% drop in morning congestion along the E120 road, a crucial feeder road to Nicosia.
Future Developments
- The first phase of the Paphos-Polis Chrysochous motorway is on track for completion in 2025, bringing a brighter transportation future.
- Phase 3 of the Larnaka-Dhekelia coastal road improvement is expected to be finalized in the first half of 2025.
- Moreover, constructions on the Germasogeia-Akrounta-Dierona-Arakapas road and the Limassol-Saitta road are anticipated to reach completion in summer 2024.
Advice for Motorists
Motorists are strongly advised to:
- Plan your journeys in advance
- Consider alternative routes whenever feasible
- Always adhere to temporary road signs and police instructions for safety[1]
These improvements are a part of Cyprus’s ambitious agenda focused on upgrading road infrastructure. The goal? To enhance traffic flow, boost safety, and ultimately support regional development.
